For centuries, Marseilles Figs have been a symbol of abundance and sweetness, enchanting gardeners and gourmets alike.  Among our selection, the Marseilles Fig stands out for its delightful flavor and reliable yields.

History of the Variety: The Marseilles Fig has its roots deeply embedded in the culinary traditions of the Mediterranean. Renowned for its lush, green skin and vibrant, sweet flesh, this variety has been a staple in gardens and kitchens for generations. At his Monticello estate, Thomas Jefferson demonstrated a keen interest in cultivating figs, and the Marseilles variety was among his favorites. He was known to share cuttings of this particular fig with friends and neighbors, indicating his success and enthusiasm for this fruit.

Brief Rooting Instructions: Getting started with cuttings is relatively easy.  Plant it in a well-draining potting mix, ensuring the cutting is buried at least a few inches deep. Water it generously, place it in a warm and sunny spot, and keep the soil consistently moist. Our complete rooting instructions, which we'll send with your order, will guide you through this process step by step.

Spacing and Protection from Cold: Proper spacing and protection from cold are crucial for the thriving of your Marseilles Fig. We recommend spacing your trees at least 7 to 12 feet apart to allow for adequate growth and airflow, although espaliering these plants up a southern-facing wall can be done closer and means better protection and yields. When it comes to protecting your fig tree from chilly temperatures, we recommend cutting the plants down after they drop their leaves, mulch with 18-24" of straw around the base to insulate the roots.
